Hello to the members and friends of HFMA Region 8!
Region 8 has had a busy summer and the start of fall is looking to be just as full!
We had our most successful Mid-America Summer Institute (MASI) yet in August! Our fifth annual regional conference was held in Kansas City and was full of excellent programming, networking and collaboration among HFMA members! The 2017 MASI was so successful, the decision was made to continue to host the meeting in Kansas City through 2020! We feel strongly that one of the events our guests enjoy the most is the baseball outing. This year it was the Royals hosting the St. Louis Cardinals and everyone had an excellent time at the game. Keeping in mind that we want to continue hosting a baseball event as a part of MASI, we have chosen August 6-8, 2018 as the dates for our next regional conference. The Royals will host the Chicago Cubs on August 7. Mark your calendars now for next August for MASI18 – you won’t want to miss it!
Your chapter’s President and President-Elects have just completed the annual Fall Presidents Meeting (FPM) in Dallas. This meeting is an annual event in which HFMA initiatives and goals are shared and chapter leaders have opportunities to learn from others for the betterment of HFMA. There is much going on with HFMA on the national level and members will see many positive changes coming in the short and long terms. One of the immediate changes you will soon see is that we are moving to a new centralized registration platform, hosted by Cvent. As a member, this platform will be easier to navigate when you register for a webinar or conference and easier to accumulate continuing education hours. One of the main themes we heard at FPM is member engagement and the vision of how we continue to be the go-to source for healthcare financial professionals in this ever-changing time in our industry. Be watching for more information to be coming soon as HFMA continues to evolve to meet your needs!
As we outline the exciting things happening at the regional and national levels, we should also recognize the local chapters and the great work that goes on within your chapters! There are some exciting meetings coming up this fall and winter!
Our local chapters are usually the first introduction the member makes with HFMA and they provide excellent education and networking opportunities for you, our member. Whether you’re new to healthcare and want to learn about the industry, you’re a seasoned member and need a deeper dive into details of a specific segment or you’re an early careerist looking for a place to plug in, HFMA is your place! Local chapters are led by tireless and enthusiastic volunteers who are always welcoming to members who wish to participate. I encourage you all to engage with your local leaders – it can be as simple as attending a chapter meeting or volunteering for a committee. Believe me, you will get more out of it than you put into it!
Thank you again for the opportunity to serve HFMA Region 8, the best region in HFMA!
A message from our Region 8 Executive – Kyle Lee
Hello members and supporters of HFMA Region 8!
This is my first newsletter article and I am very honored to be serving you as your Region 8 Executive! It is a privilege to serve you and to work with so many dedicated volunteers! I’ve been a member of HFMA Region 8 for many years and I am proud of our long history of excellent chapters and exceptional leaders!
Among those exceptional leaders includes Bill Fenske who served as Region Executive for the 2016-2017 HFMA year. Bill has been such a servant for our Region and has left a mark of progress for us that we will benefit from for many years. Many, many thanks to Bill for his dedication and leadership! I’m pleased that Chris Vairo has been elected to the position of REII (Region Executive for 2018-2019) and brings a wealth of knowledge and vision to progress our chapters. Devon Kim has been elected to the position of REIII (Region Executive for 2019 – 2020) and brings experience and enthusiasm to help our chapters continue to excel. We have impressive bench strength of leadership to continue the path of Region 8 excellence!
During the HFMA year, you can expect your Region Executive team to
· Serve as the primary volunteers and policy liaisons between the Chapters and HFMA National
· Assist chapter leaders in serving its members
· Foster dialogue and effective communications between HFMA National and the local chapters
· Represent the needs and interests of chapter leaders to the HFMA National Board and management
· Encourage chapters to collaborate with each other and with other organizations
In addition to these responsibilities, we have some exciting things planned to support Region 8 members. The Region Executive team’s initiatives include
· Support new initiatives and opportunities set forth by HFMA National, including successful completion of the Chapter Balanced Score Card
· Promote the Mid-America Summer Institute as the premier regional HFMA summer event
· Assist chapters with communication and support by marked improvements to the HFMA Region 8 website
· Develop the Region 8 Sponsorship Program (R8SP) to strengthen our business partner relationships
These are admittedly lofty goals and will not come to completion in one HFMA year. These initiatives began in 2016 and will continue as the baton is passed between the Region 8 Executive and chapter leadership teams.
I was very happy to see many of you at ANI in Orlando June 25-28. One of the highlights of this awesome event was the installation of Carol Friesen, FHFMA as the 2017 – 2018 HFMA National Chair. Carol is a member of the Nebraska Chapter and is the Vice President at Bryan Health in Lincoln and we could not be more excited to have an esteemed leader from Region 8 in such a vital role! Her theme, “Where Passion Meets Purpose” offers a call to action for HFMA members and other healthcare leaders to reach, learn, participate and engage in authentic stewardship of lives, relationships and resources. I hope you each have an opportunity to meet Carol; you will truly be inspired by her vision and motivation of where we are going as an association and industry!
You will have that opportunity to meet Carol at the 2017 Mid-America Summer Institute in Kansas City August 7 – 9! Carol will kick off a strong agenda of timely education which includes
· Tom Osborne, former Nebraska Football Coach and US Congressman
· Day Egusquiza, President of AR Systems
· Paul Taylor, CEO of Ozarks Community Health System
· Dr. David Barbe, President of American Medical Association
· Bob Bonney, Vice President of St. Luke’s Health System
· Joe Fifer, CEO and President of HFMA
· Larry Goldberg, President of Larry Goldberg Consulting
· Dr. Patricia Meier, CMS Region VII Chief Medical Officer
There will be a packed agenda of 27 different topic to fill your brain!
Additionally, we will have a baseball outing on August 8 with the Kansas City Royals host the St. Louis Cardinals! There are a limited number of baseball tickets, so don’t delay registering and grabbing your ticket for the game! As an alternative to baseball, we will be offering a Wine Dinner at the Kansas City Plaza.
We will also be offering Chapter Leader Booster Sessions to help our valued volunteers with strategy and execution within your own chapter! Some of these sessions will be reemphasis and continuation of key points from the Leadership Training Conference (LTC) in Phoenix and other sessions will be new information to share among our leaders. These sessions will be included within MASI2017 and can be chosen during the MASI registration process.
Ultimately, MASI2017 is an event to not be missed! You can register for MASI2017 and keep up to date on the latest news at www.hfmaregion8.org.
In closing, thank you again for the opportunity to serve Region 8, the best region in HFMA! I look forward to the year ahead of us and I hope I meet as many of you as possible throughout the year!
